My passion is helping people to develop a healthy relationship with food. I’ve spent almost two decades counseling patients and clients who desire nutrition therapy for many different reasons. In some cases, medication has been recommended, but there may be plenty of opportunities to improve diet and lifestyle before turning to pharmaceuticals. Other times the goal is reducing cardiac risk, and managing blood sugars to prevent/control Diabetes. Sometimes appropriate weight gain is the goal: pregnancy nutrition; disordered eating; fueling for peak performance (true athletes and weekend warriors alike.) The vast majority of time, however, I have found that people seek nutrition counseling for weight loss.
Again, the motivation varies (perhaps the goal is better energy levels, pain reduction, improved quality of life, improved self esteem, or just plain vanity) and there is never any judgment in my practice. The same themes walk into my clinic or login to my virtual counseling sessions over and over again. Individuals find themselves utterly confused by the mixed “health advice” and nutrition noise in the media. Oftentimes patients and clients are not lacking knowledge (quite the opposite...they are overly familiar with every diet in the book) but instead what is lacking is the balanced foundation: the mindfulness, the self-awareness and the understanding of why we eat. Once the proper foundation has been established, weight loss is often a simple, beneficial side effect. Some people who struggle with weight management have a complex social-emotional history that has led them to unhealthy coping habits involving food. Others just need a little guidance to make sure they are concentrating their efforts to “eat healthy” strategically, otherwise yo-yo diet cycling can persist. My goal is to share my years of experience, along with my sound background in evidence-based medical nutrition therapy, to help guide you along YOUR unique path to wellness and achieving your best self.
